Well, we went to the vet today after another 22 hours of fasting. We’re not entirely sure what she did but she came back out telling us she doesn’t know what it is and doesn’t want to poke and prod Dee anymore than she already has. Diesel seems to give no signs of discomfort when the area with the lump is massaged so the Dr. presumes she’s fine. I guess that’s good news but I feel terribly unsettled. What is this lump?! We’re really hoping its just some sort of scar tissue from being spayed. I would love to talk to someone who might have another opinion on the matter but we don’t want to spend more money and cause more harm. Our vet told us just to watch her and see how she’s feeling. If she starts to get weird [weirder than she already is], we’ll bring her back in. So, I guess the best thing to do now is just try and put it all in the back of my mind and just continue to be in tune with how Diesel is feeling. I was really hoping today would allow me the opportunity to breathe again..
Oh, we DID find out that she has Hip Dysplasia which is very common in English Bulldogs. We certainly didn’t want it to happen so early, she’s only 4, but it is what it is.. We’ll have to start saving up in case she needs a hip replacement. Animals are so exhausting! Mentally and financially…
We stuffed Diesel full of food yesterday before her deadline at 6pm, to be sure she’d have a bowel movement in time for her vet appointment. That’s when the vet told us to start fasting her again until her appointment later today. Yesterday she had a softer bowel movement which was the case two days prior. Today however.. I woke up to her at 5.45am jumping off the bed and sitting in front of the bedroom door. It took me a good 5 minutes to realize she needed to go outside. Thank god I got my ass up and out of bed because she took off to the dirt and immediately went… Liquid diarrhea. I am SO thankful she made it outside and didn’t have to do that inside. It would have probably made me throw up cleaning it.
I had her hang outside a little longer after checking to make sure she didn’t have any on her and she ran over to another area and tried to go again. I’m not sure if more came out or if it was just a fart but it certainly was not a glamorous situation for her.. I am certainly proud of her holding onto to it while she waited for me to stop being selfish and get out of bed..
Last week’s bladder infection turned into so much more. We finished Diesel’s antibiotics on Friday and took in a urine sample yesterday to be sure everything was cleared up. It was quite the task trying to get her to pee in a Tupperware container! The vet called a few hours later to tell us they had found abnormal cells. Let the worry begin.
We took her into the vet at 1.30 to have them take another sample and ultrasound. They ended up having to sedate her to get a sample directly from the bladder to be sure that wasn’t the root of the problem.
Our next step was to fast her until today’s vet appointment so the vet could do more tests. Unfortunately, Diesel didn’t expel any bowels so the vet cancelled the tests until Thursday. She wants to be sure she’s empty so we’ll have to fast her again starting tomorrow night. I’m not sure if it’s Diesel or us who feels the most tortured. We’re sick with worry and felt so bad that we couldn’t give into her hungry puppy dog eyes..
We’re hoping Thursday is successful in getting her prepared for the vet and that the next set of tests help tell us what the lump is. The vet told me to take an hour to go breathe and let them do their thing and when I got back Diesel was a loopy lump. The vet said the urine was clean [bladder cancer is out] and showed me the ultrasound to help explain what she found. It was a lump the size of a golf ball pushing up on the bladder. She’s unsure of what it is and doesn’t want to probe it in worry that it’s an abscess. It could be the result of when she was spayed, a tumor, or even a ball of feces..
Please cross your fingers the lump is nothing serious. <3
Um. This Humunga Stache dog toy is just hilarious! I will definitely be ordering Dee one of these. Who cares if she’s a girl, it’s too funny not to take advantage of her modesty [or lack of] at our expense. 15 dollars is totally reasonable for a good laugh. OR here’s a mini one for $10. I’m in love.
Yesterday’s monthly $20 vet visit turned into a bit of a costly ordeal. Usually the vet tech takes care of D and she’s in and out in less than 5 minutes. Yesterday, I found myself waiting for D to come back out for over 15 minutes. Eventually the vet came out saying she was concerned that D might have bladder stones or a bladder infection. She went ahead and did an ultra sound and urinalysis while I waited another 10 minutes silently freaking out. Afterall, I did just see a golden retriever wobble out with a large tumor on her right back leg, poor thing :[ After plenty of silent worries, the vet came out with Diesel at her feet with news that it was just a bladder infection. 10 days of antibiotics. Crisis averted. So, $225 later, we have a slightly grumpy dog on our hands and a hole in our pockets. We’re so thankful we have a veterinary clinic that is so in tune with our baby girl. Now we just have 10 days of trying to force her to eat pills every morning and night..
