Below is my process for the illustrations of your custom pet portraits. I take a few of your images and sketch out an outline in Adobe Illustrator. I then go in and draw the most prominent color underneath the outline and slowly add in additional highlights, shades, specific colorings and markings and then all the details of the face. I then add a background and cast shadow which I think, really makes the image. I can do this based on what color I think looks best with your pet’s coloring or I can use a version of a color you ask for.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous last week and the sun decided to stick around for the weekend so I insisted we take a drive out to the coast. We’re only about 20-40 minutes from Bodega Bay and its a beautiful drive through endless fields with sheep and cows as well as a few small towns with lots of character. I hope to explore them quite a bit once summer hits!
We ventured to Dillon Beach yesterday with Diesel which is dog friendly but the beach weather wasn’t entirely ideal with its 20mph winds.. We just walked around a bit and took a few photos of Dee. Here are a few of my favorites from the day :]
I honestly have no idea where the week went. It feels like Sunday just ended!
I had a few changes happen recently, one of which was regaining my sanity… I’ve been overworking myself the last several months so I finally set my priorities and let a few things go.. It certainly wasn’t easy and unfortuntaly really affected a few people but we just can’t please everyone all the time. My own happiness has to take priority. :]
Speaking of finding happiness.. A good friend of mine sent me a link to a TED video: Shawn Achor – The Happy Secret to Better Work. Watch it! I’d paraphrase it but I would completely butcher the points he’s trying to make.
Feeling incredibly inspired by this fantastic lecture, I’m going to spend the next 21 days training my brain to be more positive. This includes spending a few minutes each day doing the following:
- Write three new things you are grateful for
- Journal about one new positive thing that happened within the last 24 hours
- Meditate and allow yourself to break free of the ADD tendencies to multi-task
- Commit random acts of kindness [send a thoughtful email or facebook message each morning]
I might add another requirement for the new daily routine like reading from a list of personal affirmations for self-confidence boosting. I occasionally doubt my talent, self-worth, etc due to how I was raised and while I’ve overcome most of the many trials and tribulations of my youth, they haven’t disappeared completely. :]
I’d also love to read a few pages of Eckhart Tolle’s book, A New Earth. It’s a fantastic book with teachings for waking up to a new, enlightened mind set. I’ve read through this book on countless occasions and feel that much of the growth during my 20’s was due to much his words. I definitely recommend grabbing a copy from your local bookstore.
I’m sure you’re wondering who the person is behind the illustrations and posts… I conveniently forgot to put a photo up in the about me section when I first put up the site. I wanted to get a new image but I’m not a huge fan of sitting in front of a camera so it hasn’t happened yet. Here’s an old one :]
Writing a bio about yourself, in theory, sounds easy.. You know yourself better than anyone, right? The idea of making yourself sound intriguing without sounding conceited or something you’re not is in reality, rather difficult. As a whole, I’m a fairly humble person… I work a lot, get far too little sleep, and have a modest group of amazing friends located all around the globe.
As an artist, I’ve struggled to find that one thing that I truely love the most. I went to school for photography and really enjoy taking long exposures but it’s only ideal in the warm months of the year. I’ve done studio art, graphic design, web design, and have finally settled down with illustrating in Adobe Illustrator. I absolutely love it. I have so many people to thank for getting me to the point I’m at right now and I hope to dedicate a series blog posts in the future just for thank yous.
The biggest influence in my life right now is my boyfriend Steve… We’re perfect for each other. Steve is an entrepreneur with the ability to master any task he sets out after. He’s constantly coming up with new ideas [this week theEnglishBulldog.com] and always managing to completely overwhelm me. ;] Right now our three main projects are VinylDecals.com, Wallums.com, and our print and design shop. He handles most of the production and business aspects of them while I just design and help add products. Together we’re unstoppable.
Our “weekends” are usually spent working but we do our best to make a trip to the grocery store or go for a bike ride. So rebellious! Overall, we’re pretty boring but Diesel tends to make up for this with her good looks and unbeatable personality.
Diesel seems to be just fine this week [phew!] but I’ve been a hot mess. I’m starting to feel a bit more normal and hope to take care of a bunch of loose ends around here. Today I’ll be finishing up a rhino, drawing an adorable boxer named Bryndee, and finishing up my About Me section. Hopefully this weekend I’ll have time to finish adding prints, get a few blog posts squared away, and bust out some new illustrations. I created a notebook with Evernote with a list of ideas and it’s growing out of hand! I also have several illustrations started that I need to finish up including some retro cameras, a vintage sewing machine, and fluffy kittens. I’m thinking the kittens will take priority. ;]
Mother’s Day is coming up, have you started to think about what you might do?
